Frankly, I think we probably couldn't have done anything in recent years to save it -- the wall was leaning & bending outward so badly that even touching it might have provoked collapse.
Once they begin to fail a little, masonry structures are famous for totally collapsing "with no warning." At least a fence was in place so that if this had occurred while people were around, no one would be killed!
If bitten, immediately remove carefully with "fine-tipped tweezers" or "tick removal tool".
